Goodbye Air Purifiers, This ‘Water’ Can Fight Indoor Air Pollution
When smog was at its peak during 2016 Diwali season, air pollution became the talk of the town. Reports indicated that the sale of air purifiers shot up by almost 40 percent! Previously, air purifiers were merely accessories enquired by many but bought by only a handful. Come November and it looked almost like a necessity. Real estate and allied sectors are taking the cue and developing means to combat everyday pollution. Here’s the solution-
It contains almost 99 percent water but the effect in terms of air purification is as good as that of two trees. Sagan Coat, trademarked by Kon Corporation, has brought to India a kind of coating which when applied on the walls removes all kinds of pollutants. The titanium dioxide coating product is said to be used for self-cleaning surfaces, deodorization, sterilization, volatile organic compound removal as well as for the removal of pollutants. It is easy to use and can be applied to a variety of conventional surfaces, either pre or post-construction.
Hemanshu Patel, spokesperson of the company says, “Ordinary external wall building materials are prone to static electricity, which tend to attract dust, leading to contamination of walls. The coating has super hydrophilic features and works under the action of light. It can absorb the water content in the air to form a thin water film which inhibits static electricity generation and prevents dust from adhering to walls.”
Would this coating make your walls look less appealing? No, in fact it is transparent but preferably should be used on lighter surfaces. The coating helps clean the air by reacting with airborne pollutants in daylight or under indoor fluorescent light or even LED lights. So you can effectively clean the air of viruses, bacteria, fungi, mites, smoke odour, VOC’s and smog pollutants.
Will it leave a bad odour in the room? Not at all! “Organic substances and microbes commonly responsible for foul smell or toxic vapour is absorbed and constantly broken down into harmless by-products, removing any offending smell that comes with it,” says Patel.
Where can you use these? Almost everywhere- concrete wall facades, external walls, internal walls, dark rooms, sanitary ware, glass coatings and even ceramic tiles.
You might be estimating the costs by now. Patel puts it at Rs 7,000 per kg or Rs 30-35 per sq ft. While there may be a lot of competitive products in the market, go in for the certified ones only.
